Is Breast Reduction Right for You? A Complete Guide for Patients in St. George, Utah

Dealing with heavy, uncomfortable breasts can cause significant discomfort, including back and neck pain, trouble sleeping, and even shortness of breath or frequent headaches. Daily activities such as lifting your child or working at a desk may feel challenging. If these issues sound familiar, Breast Reduction Surgery could be the right solution for you.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, skin, and tissue from the breasts. This surgery can be performed on any gender, including men who suffer from enlarged breasts.

Why Choose Breast Reduction Surgery in St. George, Utah?

There can be several reasons behind choosing a breast reduction surgery, which can include:
  • Chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain
  • Skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts
  • Difficulty with exercise or physical activity
  • Nerve problems like numbness or tingling
Having large breasts can also make it difficult to find the right size of clothing, and even affect your health.

Are You An Ideal Candidate?

Some of the things that make you an ideal candidate are:
  • You struggle with physical activities such as exercise, sports, or even daily tasks
  • Have skin irritation or rashes under your breasts
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You experience chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain

Understanding the Procedure

The first step in this procedure is a thorough consultation with one of our experienced providers. During this meeting, we will discuss your goal, assess your physical health and breast size, and determine if you are the ideal candidate. Once you are deemed a good candidate, you will be provided instructions on how to prepare for the surgery.  The surgery typically takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Upon your arrival at St. George Body Sculpting and Aesthetics, you will be seated comfortably. Afterwards, general anesthesia will be given to ensure a pain-free and relaxed treatment, and an incision will be made. The type of incision used depends on the amount of reduction required and the desired final shape of the breast. Some of the common incision techniques are periareolar incision, vertical incision, and anchor or inverted-T incision. Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will remove excess fat, tissue, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. Liposuction may be used in some cases to remove fat. The remaining breast tissue is then reshaped to provide a firmer, more lifted appearance. In many cases, the nipple and areola need to be repositioned to provide the new breast shape with a youthful and symmetrical look. After the tissue is removed and the breasts reshaped, Dr Ahmed will carefully close the incisions using sutures.  After the surgery, we will move you to a recovery room where you will be monitored until the anesthesia wears off. We will provide you with aftercare instructions.

Recovery Timeline

During the first week of recovery, you will need to rest and manage discomfort. You’ll experience swelling, bruising, and some pain after the surgery, which can be controlled with the prescribed medication. During this time, you will be required to wear a compression garment to support your breasts and help reduce swelling. In the second week, you can gradually choose to do light activities, but avoid heavy lifting. By weeks three to four, swelling will decrease, and you may begin to see early results. After one to two months, most discomfort will be gone, and you can start gentle exercises. The final results will show within six months to a year.
