What Is Vaginoplasty?
Vaginoplasty is a Vaginal tightening surgical procedure that tightens and restores the vaginal canal and surrounding tissues. While it can be done for gender-affirming care or birth defects, most women in Southern Utah seek vaginoplasty after vaginal childbirth or age-related changes. In many cases, vaginoplasty includes repairing the posterior vaginal wall, which may have stretched or weakened. It also rebuilds the perineum, the area between the vaginal opening and the anus, if it’s become thin, torn, or scarred after childbirth. Here’s what’s involved:
- Incisions are made inside the vaginal canal (no external scarring)
- Stretched muscles and support tissues are brought back together
- Absorbable stitches are used, so there’s nothing to remove later
- The vaginal opening may be reshaped, especially if there is sagging or visible gaping
- It’s performed as an outpatient procedure, often under general anesthesia, and takes 1–2 hours.
The Benefits of Modern Vaginoplasty
Every woman’s reason for choosing vaginoplasty is personal, but many patients experience some or all of the following benefits:Better Support and Less Bulge
A common issue after childbirth is a rectocele, or a bulge where the back wall of the vagina pushes forward due to weak support. This can cause discomfort, a feeling of fullness, or difficulty with bowel movements. By treating this area, vaginoplasty restores proper support, helping reduce or eliminate the bulge.Improved Sexual Comfort
Loss of friction, looseness, or discomfort during sex are concerns many women find hard to talk about, but they’re very real. After vaginoplasty, many patients report:- A more snug, natural-feeling vaginal canal
- Improved confidence and sensation
- Less discomfort from scarring or gaping
Relief from Old Tears or Scar Tissue
Childbirth can sometimes leave behind perineal tears or scars that never heal properly. These can tug, burn, or even cause embarrassment. Vaginoplasty often includes a perineoplasty, which smooths out this area and improves both comfort and appearance.Emotional Confidence
Many patients tell us they feel restored, not just physically, but emotionally. Feeling like your body is back in balance, having intimacy without anxiety, and simply not being bothered by symptoms anymore can make a huge impact. What It Won’t Do (and Why That Matters)
It won’t treat every pelvic issue, and it’s important to know where it fits.- It doesn’t fix urinary incontinence. If you leak when you sneeze or exercise, that may require a separate treatment like a bladder sling.
- It’s not a replacement for pelvic floor therapy. In fact, many women benefit from doing Kegel exercises or seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist before or after surgery.
- It’s not the same as laser vaginal rejuvenation. Those treatments are marketed as non-surgical options, but many are not FDA-approved, and there are reports of complications. Vaginoplasty is a medical procedure performed by a trained surgeon.
